Thermoplastic polymers provide a weight advantage over traditional carbon composites used in major aircraft components. They are also easier to recycle and repurpose, and their production requires less energy, making them a more environmentally friendly option.

In production, thermoplastic composites enable fuselage sections to be assembled using innovative methods, reducing both costs and production time. A key goal of the MFFD project is to streamline the production of thermoplastic composite fuselage barrels, aiming for a rate of 60 to 100 aircraft per month.

In a groundbreaking moment for space exploration, SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission made history by completing the first-ever commercial spacewalk, or extravehicular activity (EVA).

A four-person civilian crew aboard the Dragon spacecraft ventured beyond the confines of their capsule, stepping into the vastness of space at an altitude of 732.2 kilometers above Earth. This remarkable feat marks the first time non-government astronauts have successfully conducted a spacewalk, pushing the boundaries of commercial spaceflight.

The spacewalk was a significant milestone in human space exploration, with the crew venturing farther into space than anyone has since NASA’s Apollo missions, over 50 years ago. After reaching a record altitude, Dragon was lowered to 737 kilometers at its highest point to initiate the spacewalk.

Commander Jared Isaacman, the mission leader, was the first to step outside, tethered to the spacecraft as he experienced the raw beauty of space, remarking, “This sure looks like a perfect world,” as he gazed down at Earth.

Isaacman spent around 10 to 15 minutes in the vacuum of space, maneuvering while tethered to Dragon and waving back at his crew. Shortly after, mission specialist Sarah Gillis, also a civilian astronaut, followed Isaacman out of the capsule. At that time, Dragon was traveling at a speed of 25,806 kilometers per hour, 610 kilometers above Earth. Both astronauts successfully returned to Dragon after completing a series of movements and observations in space.

In addition to making history, the crew conducted vital scientific experiments and installed new technology while outside the spacecraft. This spacewalk not only tested the capabilities of civilians in space but also allowed SpaceX to trial new systems and suits. The crew used a specialized hatch structure called “Skywalker,” featuring handholds and footholds for added stability and mobility.

This setup differs from the larger external structures of the International Space Station (ISS), which typically offers more anchoring points for astronauts. Beyond its historical significance, this spacewalk represents a key moment in the evolution of space travel.

It provides a glimpse into SpaceX’s future ambitions of developing more affordable and flexible spacesuits, designed for a broader range of astronauts. By advancing these technologies, SpaceX is paving the way for more accessible space exploration, potentially opening the door for civilians and private missions in the years to come.

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are now grappling with the possibility of a significantly extended mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), potentially lasting into 2025.

Originally scheduled to return after a shorter stay, the duo, who arrived at the ISS on June 5, 2024, aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, may now be required to remain in orbit due to unforeseen technical complications, as reported by multiple media outlets.

The prospect of an extended stay raises serious concerns about the long-term health and well-being of the astronauts. The ISS orbits approximately 400 kilometers above Earth, beyond the protection of our planet’s atmosphere and magnetic field. This exposes the crew to elevated levels of solar radiation, which can be harmful over prolonged periods.

According to the European Space Agency, certain areas of the station’s orbit experience radiation levels more than 30 times higher than on Earth, a concern highlighted in a recent CNBC-TV18 report.

Extended exposure to such radiation can lead to a variety of health risks, including an increased likelihood of cancer, tissue damage, and complications with the nervous system. NASA data reveals that sunita williams salary radiation levels on the ISS can range from 50 to 20,000 milli-sieverts—equivalent to receiving between 150 and 6,000 chest X-rays.

Prolonged exposure to microgravity can result in substantial bone and muscle deterioration. NASA has documented that astronauts may lose approximately 1 percent of their bone mass each month, particularly in critical areas such as the lower spine, hips, and femur. This loss of bone density, along with muscle atrophy, can pose serious challenges for the astronauts upon their return to Earth, potentially affecting their mobility and overall health.

In response to these challenges, NASA is actively exploring alternative options to ensure the safe return of Williams and Wilmore. Steve Stich, Manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, noted that preparations are underway with SpaceX for a potential return via the Crew Dragon spacecraft. sunita williams net worth

“We have been working with SpaceX to ensure that they are ready to respond on Crew 9. returning Butch and Suni on Crew 9 if we need that,” Stich stated. However, the final decision on the astronauts’ return strategy remains pending.

Airbus has been chosen by the French Space Agency (CNES) to design and manufacture two advanced microwave radiometers for the C²OMODO mission, a key component of the Atmosphere Observing System (AOS).

This international collaboration involves the United States, Canada, Japan, Italy, and France, and aims to enhance our understanding of the links between aerosols, clouds, atmospheric convection, and precipitation.

The C²OMODO mission, which stands for Convective Core Observations through MicrOwave Derivatives in the trOpics, is part of a broader initiative involving six satellites and various suborbital platforms both in the air and on the ground. This extensive network will provide crucial data to improve weather forecasts, air quality assessments, and climate predictions.

Alain Fauré, Head of Space Systems at Airbus, expressed enthusiasm about the project, highlighting the significance of working on climate missions. “Just a few weeks after the launch of the EarthCARE mission with Europe and Japan, it is an honor to be part of another climate mission, this time NASA-led with international partners,” said Fauré.

He also thanked CNES for their support, noting that this contract further solidifies Airbus’s role in advancing our understanding of clouds, weather, and climate.

The C²OMODO mission will deliver the first global observations of vertical air motions and precipitation properties in convective storms. This capability will enhance our understanding of intense precipitation formation and improve the representation of these processes in weather models, leading to more accurate global weather forecasts.

The high-frequency microwave radiometers, designed and built in Toulouse, France, will be installed on two AOS satellites: AOS-Storm, led by the U.S., and the Precipitation Measuring Mission (PMM), led by Japan. The radiometers will work together in an inclined orbit, providing valuable data for the mission’s objectives.
